Review of The WIld Dead by Carrie Vaughn. In this dystopian novel, a slow pace and some predictable plot twists weaken an otherwise strong novel. Terrific characterization, great world-building, and a strong ending make this an enjoyable read, though. 3 stars.

The Ronin's Mistress by Laura Joh Rowland. Excellent characters, exciting plot, and well-written historical setting make this a good addition to the Sano Ichiro detective series. But the outlook on life feels bleak and hopeless. 4 stars.
