In the background are book covers for 5 mystery novels: The Lonely Witness by William Boyle; Gnosis by Rick Hall; Beijing Payback by Daniel Nieh; The Controller by Matt Brolly; and Darksight by D. C. Mallery. In the foreground is a green oval showing the words, "Mysteries about fathers." In honor of Father’s Day this past weekend (in the U.S., at least!), I’ve put together a top 5 list of mystery novels about fathers. The father-child relationship had to be a big part of the story. Some of these novels are fantasy with major mystery novel elements.

The Lonely Witness by William Boyle

Amy’s father abandoned her years ago. Newly sober, he reappears in her life. How should she respond?

Gnosis by Rick Hall

Sam’s father has been murdered, and the authorities think he was a “dirty cop.” She knows that can’t be true. She decides to find the killers and the truth.

The Controller by Matt Brolly

Years ago, Lynch’s son Daniel was abducted. Lynch, a former FBI agent, believes a mysterious and dangerous underground group called “the Railroad” has abducted him. His obsession with finding them–and his son–has cost him both his marriage and job. Then a criminal claims that Daniel is alive.

Darksight by D. C. Mallery

Jenson feels guilty about the accident that killed his wife and left his daughter Audra blind. Now he’s obsessed with finding a cure for Audra’s blindness–whether or not she wants it.

Beijing Payback by Daniel Nieh

Releases in July 2019! Thanks to Netgalley, I got a review copy. Victor Li’s father has been murdered. Then a young man from China arrives, bringing news: Mr. Li was a smuggler and his old smuggling partners ordered his death. He also brings a letter from Mr. Li, written in anticipation of his untimely death, which tells Victor to go to China and bring justice. But can Victor do it?

Three more to consider:

Baby’s First Felony by John Straley and Keep Her Safe by K. A. Tucker.

The Orphan’s Song by Lauren Kate also has a subtle father/child theme, though it’s not obvious at first.

To all you fathers out there, doing your best to raise your kids, thank you.
