If you’re like me, August is a bit overwhelming. The summer heat’s still stifling and the AC’s still cranked up high but the kids are going back to school. We’re caught between the world of carefree summer and the world of school-year routine.  So any escape is welcome! Thanks to various publishers and Netgalley’s generosity, I got to read and review several new mystery releases that will be published in August 2019. Like historical mysteries? Psychological suspense? Romantic suspense? Or maybe an archaeologist-turned-sleuth?

You’ll find all that here.

Shows book covers of Where There is Smoke by Elisabeth Rose; Catacombs by Mary Anna Evans; The Third Mrs. Durst by Ann Aguirre; The Victim by Max Manning; and A Conspiracy of Wolves by Candace Robb. Text box reads, Love historical mysteries and psychological suspense? Here's 5 mystery releases August 2019.

A Conspiracy of Wolves by Candace Robb

Publication date: August 1. (That’s today! You have no excuse not to click over to Amazon and order this fabulous book.)

Genre: Historical mystery

14th century spy Owen Archer investigates a murder of a member of a prominent York family. Sympathetic characters, rich historical detail, and a great mystery. As I wrote in my review, it’s must-read historical fiction.

The Victim by Max Manning

Publication date: August 6.

Genre: Psychological suspense

During a violent attack, Gem must choose whether to fight or surrender to her attacker. The novel follows each scenario and the results (which are not what you’d expect!) in her life. Gripping plot and psychologically astute. You can read my review of The Victim here.

Here’s the link to its Amazon page.

The Third Mrs. Durst by Ann Aguirre

Publication date: August 8.

Genre: Psychological suspense

Poor but beautiful Marlena marries wealthy & powerful Michael Durst, only to learn that his first two wives have died tragically. Maybe he murdered them. Can she survive?

You can read my review here and look at the Amazon page here. It definitely wasn’t my type of book but others have enjoyed it.

Catacombs by Mary Anna Evans

Publication date: August 13, 2019

Genre: Amateur sleuth (with FBI agents, too)

Archaeologist Faye survives a bombing that might’ve targeted an indigenous arts conference. It reveals underground rooms & the bodies of 3 children. Compassionate, timely, & suspenseful.

My review is here and here’s the Amazon page.

Where There is Smoke by Elisabeth Rose

Publication date: August 20, 2019

Genre: Romantic suspense

An Australian veterinarian & an insecure heiress uncover a scam involving a valuable horse and some dangerous men. As they investigate, the danger increases from both man-made and natural disasters. My review is coming soon.

Check out the Amazon page to preorder. It’s also available on Escape Publishing’s website.

And a bonus novel. This historical time-travel romance released in late June 2019 but I recently read it. My review will be coming soon.

Beyond the Moon by Catherine Taylor

Genre: historical time-travel romance

My review is coming soon.
